La Concha mountain, Marbella

Climbed La Concha in the Sierra de las Nieves yesterday, it’s the big knarly mountain that overlooks Marbella.

Even with a drive to the refugio half-way up (on the Coín road) it is a five hour round trip, taking in mountain meadows, a pine forest, scrubland, some hairy cliff paths and finally a cracking ridge walk over rough rock with precipices on either side. The view from the top is stupendous, from (I guess) Fuengirola to Gibraltar and the Atlantic, then across to Africa.

We twice took a wrong path to the west on the way back off the ridge (something in us obviously wanted to go to Istan) but apart from that (and Faye’s fear of heights) it was plain sailing. Was hot, through, and we were glad for a bit of cloud cover at times. Four litres of water was a good idea, and I wouldn’t like to do it in July or August.
