Estepona Puerto: Greek restaurant takes off

When we moved to Estepona, there was a small Greek restaurant round the corner from our house, in it must be said a poor place for passing traffic. It opened and struggled on but shut when Kosta, the owner, decided to move down to El Puerto (the port) where he opened El Griego del Puerto. His tenacity has paid off and the new place - on the first level with a great view - is big, airy, fun and busy.

The food is good quality Greek (almost unheard of on the Costa del Sol and a reason to visit alone), but now - in a confusing mix of Greece and Spain - he’s added a tapas menu. Good move for passing trade.

Kosta loves to put on the full Greek show so expect dancing, drinking games and plate breaking at weekends, but in the new place it’s not as oppressive as it sometimes was in the confines of the old restaurant. (After all sometimes you just want to eat - or am I being very English with my reserve?)

The tapas menu is generally good value, with meat, vegetable and fish dishes at between 1.50 and 2 euros, the only completely overpriced item we found being 7 euros for three pieces of grilled halloumi. Although halloumi is hard to find in Spain, that still clocks in at about 5 euros too much.

Still, a few beers and three rounds of tasty tapas, plus the entertainment of Kosta getting the predominantly female clientele involved in dancing on tables and doing the traditional Greek knees-up - came to less that 20 euros for two of us. The guy’s worked hard to get this far, and he’s done well.

If you’re in Estepona and fancy a Greek meal - well there’s only one choice anyway, but it’s a good one.
